DESCRIPTION:Location: Coor Hall 4403\, ASU Tempe Campus.\n\nSpeakers include PHA President Sheryl Bronkesh\, Professors Volker Benkert and Jason Bruner.\n\nHolocaust education\, and genocide education more broadly\, is an area in which humanities\nscholars and scholarship can make important contributions to civic education. While many U.S.\nstates include the Holocaust and other genocides in their history and social studies standards\, there\nare relatively few resources for high school teachers to teach these atrocities in a way that is\nsensitive to the historical particularities of each genocide and provides their students with a\nmeaningful comparative framework.\nIn this event\, we will briefly introduce a framework that we developed from an eight-year\ninterdisciplinary collaboration on genocide\, including a short curricular framework for the\ncomparative study of genocide in public secondary schools. With courage\, guile\, and nerves of steel\, these “ghetto girls” paid off Gestapo guards\, hid revolvers in loaves of bread and jars of marmalade\, and helped build systems of underground bunkers. They flirted with German soldiers\, bribed them with wine\, whiskey\, and home cooking\, used their Aryan looks to seduce them\, and shot and killed them. They bombed German train lines and blew up a town’s water supply. They also nursed the sick\, taught children\, and hid families. \nYet the exploits of these courageous resistance fighters have remained virtually unknown. DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Björn Krondorfer\, Regents’ Professor\n  \nThe question of “ordinary antisemitism” will be explored through a personal story about the effects of the Holocaust and war memories in  German society after 1945\, especially as they are passed on generationally. The speaker’s parents were 18years old when the war ended. His father was drafted into the German army at age 16 and ended up in the near vicinity of a Jewish slave labor camp in Poland; his mother escaped from the advancing Soviet Army. The talk concludes with remarks on the value of dialogical engagement between the communities affected by historical trauma due to state-sponsored violent ideologies.
