SUMMARY:Rosenbluth Family Charitable Foundation Genocide Awareness Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:With special focus on the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide and the murder and displacement of Native American communities\, Genocide Awareness Week 2025 will bring different cultures of remembrance\, memorialization and repair after genocide in conversation with each other. The importance of survivor testimony\, the need to bring perpetrators to justice\, the power and limits of representation in text and art\, as well as the difficulty to represent the complexity of genocide through memorialization are shared features of confronting genocide. Equally important is the need to counter genocide denial and distortion. Starting from common themes such as these\, GAW fosters dialogues among survivors\, academics\, activists\, artists\, and government officials through presentations\, performances\, discussions\, and exhibits.\nhttps://jewishstudies.asu.edu/GAW25

SUMMARY:AJHS Book Discussion We Were the Lucky Ones
DESCRIPTION:We Were the Lucky Ones\nBy Georgia Hunter\nDiscussion led by Sheryl Bronkesh\, Phoenix Holocaust Association\nThursday\, January 9\, 2025 at 2PM\nDiscussion via ZOOM\nInspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II\, determined to survive—and to reunite—We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds. \nIt is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives\, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance\, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom\, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world\, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety. \nAs one sibling is forced into exile\, another attempts to flee the continent\, while others struggle to escape certain death\, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again\, the Kurcs must rely on hope\, ingenuity\, and inner strength to persevere. \nAn extraordinary\, propulsive novel\, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment\, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

SUMMARY:Living in Many Worlds
DESCRIPTION:From our partner\, Arizona Jewish Historical Society\n\nFriday\, September 22\, 2023 at 10AM (MST)\n\nSPEAKER: 2G and PHA Vice President Eva Flaster\n  \nEva Flaster is the daughter of two Holocaust survivors. Her father\, Chune \nFlaster\, was born in December of 1912 in Nowy Sacz\, a city in the \nCarpathian Mountains of Poland. He loved the mountains and enjoyed \nthe outdoors\, skiing\, and hiking. He lived at home with his mother and his \ntwo siblings until he enlisted in the Polish Army. When the Germans \nattacked\, the Polish Army only lasted three weeks. The Poles disbanded\, \nand he moved eastwards and was captured by the Russians who \ninvaded Poland from the East. They sent him to a gulag in the frigid\, \nfrigid north of Russia. The Russians released him in 1941and he fought \nthe Nazis for a second time. \nMeanwhile\, Eva’s mom\, Genia Nordon\, was born in Sosnowiec \n(Southwestern) Poland in 1924. She lived with her parents and three \nsiblings. She was four days shy of her fifteenth birthday when the war \nbegan. The Nazis removed them from their home and forced them into a \nless desirable apartment. Life was exceedingly difficult\, and food was \nscarce. Jews were no longer allowed to go to school. The family was \nmoved one more time in1942. This time to a sealed ghetto. \nFrom 1939 to 1942\, Genia often hid her star with a purse and tried to \nbarter for food for the family. In 1942\, the Nazis captured her\, and she \nbecame a slave laborer in a chemical plant. In January of 1945\, the \nNazis knew they were losing the war. They removed prisoners from the \ncamps and took them on the “death march” to erase all evidence of the \nconcentration camps. During the “death march\,” Genia tried to escape by \njumping from a moving train. The Nazis recaptured her\, and she went \nthrough a series of prisons\, and eventually\, she wound up in the small \nfortress at Terezin. \nTwo years after the war\, thanks to a family friend also living in the \nAmerican sector of Germany\, Chune and Genia met each other. They \ndated\, got engaged and married in 1948. Eva was born the following \nyear in the same Displaced Persons’ camp in Landsberg Am Lech. \nPlease join us on Sept. 22\, when Eva will share more about her parents’ \nstory and growing up as the child of survivors. \nRegistration: Arizona Jewish Historical Society — AZJHS Our Parent’s Stories

SUMMARY:David de Jong talks about his book\, Nazi Billionaires: The Dark History of Germany’s Wealthiest Dynasties
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an online discussion with author David de Jong on Monday April 3\, 2023 5 pm MST (8 pm EST\, 7 pm CST) \nA groundbreaking investigation of how Germany’s wealthiest men helped the Nazis grab power and how the Nazis helped German tycoons make billions off the horrors of the Third Reich and World War II. In this landmark work of investigative journalism\, David de Jong reveals the true story of how Germany’s wealthiest business dynasties amassed untold money and power by abetting the atrocities of the Third Reich. De Jong shows how these tycoons seized Jewish businesses\, procured slave laborers\, and ramped up weapons production to equip Hitler’s army as Europe burned around them. The brutal legacy of the dynasties that dominated Daimler-Benz\, cofounded Allianz\, and still control Porsche\, Volkswagen\, and BMW has remained hidden in plain sight. \nRegistration: https://tinyurl.com/m32fe35e

SUMMARY:Holding onto the Hate Let the Haters Win
DESCRIPTION:  \nFriday\, February 24\, 2023\, 10AM-12PM (MST)\nFeatured Guest: Holocaust Survivor\, Andrew Schot \nAndrew Schot was 9 years old in 1940 when the Germans invaded the Netherlands. He was almost two years younger than Anne Frank and about 5 years younger than her sister Margot. \nJewish students were banned from educational institutions\, forced into smaller Jews only schools\, this is where Andrew met Anne and through Anne\, her sister Margot. While Andrew did not grow up in a Jewish home and was not considered a Jew according to Jewish Law (Andrew’s father was Jewish\, his mother was not)\, Andrew was labeled a full blooded Jew by the anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws. He was forced to wear a yellow star and recalls a sign in a store window: “No Jews allowed when humans are on the premises”. \nHis father\, after receiving a relocation notice\, went into hiding\, returning to his home on weekends. He was caught and Andrew later found out he was taken to Bergen-Belsen. Andrew and his sister who was six years older\, went into hiding\, explaining to their mother that it would be better for all if they left. After surviving on the run for two years\, careful to never stay in one place for more than a day\, they were caught\, loaded into trucks then cattle cars\, separated from one another\, Andrew’s sister’s train went to Dachau\, Andrew’s was destined for Bergen-Belsen. \nAfter liberation Andrew made his way to the United States\, where was drafted into the U.S. Army\, later transferring to the Air Force where he served for 26 years. Andrew didn’t tell anyone — including his wife and kids — about his own family’s World War II tragedy until the mid 90s. Since then Andrew has spoken to countless students\, adults\, military\, and every graduating class of the Tucson Police Department. Andrew shares the importance of speaking up against prejudice and greed\, not forgetting but also not permitting hate to have a role in his life. \nREGISTER: https://www.azjhs.org/holocaust-survivor-conversations

SUMMARY:Discussion with Author\, Martin Goldsmith: The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany.
DESCRIPTION:The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany\n\nDiscussion with Author\, Martin Goldsmith\n  \nDecember 15\, 2022 at 2PM (MST)\nDiscussion via ZOOM\n  \nSet amid the growing tyranny of Germany’s Third Reich\, here is the riveting and emotional tale of Günther Goldschmidt and Rosemarie Gumpert\, two courageous Jewish musicians who struggled to perform under unimaginable circumstances―and found themselves falling in love in a country bent on destroying them. \nBeautifully and simply told by their son\, National Public Radio commentator Martin Goldsmith\, The Inextinguishable Symphony takes us from the cafés of Frankfurt\, where Rosemarie and Günther fell in love\, to the concert halls that offered solace and hope for the beleaguered Jews\, to the United States\, where the two made a new life for themselves that would nevertheless remain shadowed by the fate of their families.  Here is Günther and Rosemarie’s story\, a deeply moving tale of love and the remarkable resilience of the human spirit in the face of terror and persecution. \nAlong with the fate of Günther and Rosemarie’s families\, this rare memoir also illuminates the Kulturbund and the lives of other fascinating figures associated with it\, including Kubu director Kurt Singer―a man so committed to the organization that he objected to his artists’ plans for flight\, fearing that his productions would suffer. The Kubu\, which included some of the most prominent artists of the day and young performers who would gain international fame after the war\, became the sole source of culture and entertainment for Germany’s Jews. A poignant testament to the enduring vitality of music and love even in the harshest times\, The Inextinguishable Symphony gives us a compelling look at an important piece of Holocaust history that has heretofore gone largely untold. \nRegistration: The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany — Arizona Jewish Historical Society (azjhs.org)

SUMMARY:Online Discussion with Jeremy Schonfeld
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Iron & Coal” is a powerful and deeply personal rock-opera by critically acclaimed composer and performer\, Jeremy Schonfeld. Taking inspiration from his father Gustav’s memoir\, “Absence of Closure\,” Schonfeld traces his father’s attempts to create a life out of the ashes\, having spent a year in concentration camps at the age of ten. Schonfeld weaves together memories of his own childhood\, growing up under the long shadows of Auschwitz\, all while coming to terms with the death of his father and the birth of his own son. The ghosts of a distant\, vanished world\, both of horror and the iron will to survive\, mix with the present in this soaring\, emotional\, and spiritual tribute. \nRegister: https://tinyurl.com/ns86ctwn \n  \nIron & Coal is available for viewing prior to the presentation at https://vimeo.com/295417921/129cd8ac94.
