SUMMARY:Mazel
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://phoenixhsa.formstack.com/forms/mazel\n  \nThe Theatre Artists Studio\, Phoenix Holocaust Association\, and Arizona Jewish Historical Society are proud to present a staged reading and talk-back of the play “Mazel”. \nBased on the experiences of Holocaust survivor Jack Sittsamer\, who survived eight concentration camps\, “Mazel” follows Sittsamer as he comes to America after the war and begins a new life in Pittsburgh\, marrying and raising a family there. Like many survivors\, Sittsamer buried his past and refused to speak to his children about his experiences. Now at the other end of his life\, as depicted in Mazel\, Sittsamer has begun speaking out. He finds an urgent need and a sense of purpose in these lectures. And that\, unfortunately\, does nothing to soothe his prickly relationship with his daughter Pearl. When she was a child\, he would never talk about this essential fact of his life. Now she sees him sharing it with strangers. Things go from unsteady to much worse with the arrival of Martin\, a 19-year-old German spending a year abroad learning about and working with Holocaust survivors. Pearl not only doesn’t forgive the Germans\, she can’t see why anyone should … especially her father\, who has taken Martin under his wing.\n\nThe talk-back will feature Mazel’s esteemed playwright\, Amy Hartman\, the show’s cast\, and acclaimed director\, Kathleen Butler\, who will be flying in from New York to direct this compelling piece of theatre.\n\n  \nTuesday\, April 29 6:00-8:30pm \nArizona Jewish Historical Society \nCutler Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center \n122 E. Culver St.\nPhoenix\, AZ 85004\nTickets: $36/person\nRefreshments will be served.\nAll ticket proceeds will support the Holocaust education initiatives of PHA and AZJHS.

SUMMARY:Rosenbluth Family Charitable Foundation Genocide Awareness Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:With special focus on the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide and the murder and displacement of Native American communities\, Genocide Awareness Week 2025 will bring different cultures of remembrance\, memorialization and repair after genocide in conversation with each other. The importance of survivor testimony\, the need to bring perpetrators to justice\, the power and limits of representation in text and art\, as well as the difficulty to represent the complexity of genocide through memorialization are shared features of confronting genocide. Equally important is the need to counter genocide denial and distortion. Starting from common themes such as these\, GAW fosters dialogues among survivors\, academics\, activists\, artists\, and government officials through presentations\, performances\, discussions\, and exhibits.\nhttps://jewishstudies.asu.edu/GAW25

SUMMARY:Book Talk by Charlotte Adelman and Mala Blomquist
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER: https://www.bethelphoenix.com/event/charlotte\nHolocaust survivor Charlotte Adelman and writer/editor Mala Blomquist discuss and read passages from their new book\, Charlotte: A Holocaust Story of Strength\, Courage\, and Hope. Dessert reception to follow. \nCharlotte Adelman was born on March 26\, 1932\, in Paris\, France. She grew up in a traditional Jewish household with her mother\, Rose\, her father\, Herszle\, and her brother\, Max. Her early years were marked by a picturesque childhood\, filled with love and happiness. \nEverything changed when Charlotte was just ten years old. The Nazi invasion of France and occupation of Paris brought terror and upheaval to her life. \nFor the next four years\, Charlotte lived in constant danger\, fleeing for her safety on six separate occasions. During this time\, the Nazis were systematically rounding up Jews for deportation to concentration camps in Eastern Europe. Tragically\, her mother\, Rose\, was among those deported and perished in Auschwitz\, a notorious concentration camp in Poland. \nBy the end of the war\, Charlotte had been separated from her family for nearly five years. She was reunited with her father shortly after the war ended and\, following two years of tireless searching through Red Cross facilities\, she was finally reunited with her brother\, Max. \nAfter the war\, Charlotte returned to Paris and lived there until 1957 when she immigrated to Montréal\, Canada. It was there that she met Alex\, the love of her life. Together\, they built a life filled with love and joy\, sharing 50 years of marriage until Alex’s passing in 2011. They raised two wonderful children and became proud grandparents to two grandsons. \nToday\, Charlotte is an active member of the Phoenix Holocaust Survivors Association\, where she attends regular meetings and contributes to the community. In collaboration with Steven Spielberg and the Shoah Foundation\, Charlotte’s story was documented on video. Her testimony is preserved and available at each of the six major Holocaust museums worldwide. \nCharlotte’s story stands as a powerful testament to resilience and remembrance. Among the 76\,000 Parisians who perished in the Holocaust\, her mother\, Rose\, is honored at the Holocaust Museum in Paris\, built in 2005 to memorialize those who were lost. \n

SUMMARY:We Were the Lucky Ones
DESCRIPTION:Online registration has closed. Admission at the door on January 23rd will be $40/person\, payable by cash or check only.\n  \nIn partnership with the Center for Jewish Philanthropy\, please join the Phoenix Holocaust Association for an evening with New York Times bestselling author Georgia Hunter and Critics’ Choice Television Awards Best Supporting Actress Winner Busy Philipps. \nWhen Georgia Hunter was fifteen years old\, she discovered that she came from a family of Holocaust survivors. Years later\, she embarked on a journey of intensive research\, determined to unearth and record her family’s remarkable story. The result is the New York Times best seller\, We Were the Lucky Ones\, which has been published in over 20 languages and adapted for television by Hulu as an eight-part limited series. Hunter’s searing novel is the story of a Jewish family ripped away from each other at the start of the German and Russian occupation of Poland on the eve of World War II\, and their extraordinary journey back to each other—a story based on Hunter’s grandfather’s real Holocaust survival story. \n\nMs. Hunter will be interviewed by Chaparral High School alumna actress Busy Philipps\, who has starred in many critically acclaimed television series including Dawson’s Creek\, Cougar Town and Girls5eva\, and whose filmography includes Made of Honor\, He’s Just Not That Into You and Mean Girls.\n\n\n\n\nEvent Sponsors (in formation) \nJulee Landau & Robert Shahon \nBuchanan Programme & Marley Kornreich \nASU Jewish Studies \nArizona Jewish Historical Society \nGreater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival \nValley Beit Midrash \nThe Driver Provider \n
